Description:听The Community-Engaged Scholars Faculty Fellows Program is a two-year program focused on developing and deepening faculty capacity for community-engaged teaching, learning, and research. Participants commit to incorporating new forms of community-engaged teaching, learning and research into their course design and scholarship. Teams of two or more faculty from a given department or an interdisciplinary team from varied departments are welcome to apply together. No previous experience in community-engaged teaching or learning is required.

Purpose: The intent of this faculty development program is to create a community of scholars who will听develop, build upon, or produce Community-Engaged Scholarship (CES), specifically through the听following program goals:

  • Develop faculty capacity for community-engaged teaching, learning and scholarship through a community-engaged scholarly individual project (may include current research agenda)
  • Facilitate a supportive faculty community around community-engaged scholarship
  • Coordinate faculty peer feedback on the community-engaged scholarly project
  • Complete, disseminate, and submit the community-engaged scholarly project for publication

Criteria:

  • Clearly articulated interest in, demonstrated commitment to, and pursuit toward community-engaged teaching, learning, and research.
  • A well-conceived and clearly-defined rationale for community-engaged learning
  • A well-defined plan for teaching the course in the next academic year
  • A description of the development of a collaboration with a community partner
  • An articulation of how community-engaged learning will work synergistically with efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion

Stipend:听 A stipend of $3,500 will be awarded per year, per faculty member for successfully meeting the expected outcomes and creating courses that incorporate a significant component of civic engagement and service-learning into their course curriculum.

Expectations:

  • Modifying an existing course or designing a new course with a community-engaged component;听teaching听the new or revised course during the 2024-2025听academic year;
  • Being engaged听in building relationships with the community partner(s) including meeting with community partners as part of course preparation, implementation and evaluation;
  • Presenting听your experience as an instructor of a community-engaged learning course to your respective department/school, or a similar setting, within the following year;
  • Preparing and attending all cohort meetings (3 meetings a semester at a mutually agreed upon time).
  • Completing, disseminating, and submitting the community-engaged scholarly project for publication.

CSSA commits to:

  • Planning听and facilitating the Community-Engaged Scholars Faculty Fellows program meetings;
  • Identifying听readings and resources about the development of community-engaged learning courses;
  • Providing听individual curricula consultation related to community-engaged learning course development;
  • Facilitating听connections with community groups;
  • Assisting听with publicity for public presentations on this work (as requested).
