In addition to sponsoring events, Beta Chi hosts a Mentoring Program connecting incoming first-year students with successful upperclassmen. This program helps to build camaraderie amongst students and staff, and helps new students transition into graduate school. Applications for interested mentors and mentees are now being accepted.
First-year counseling students are provided transition assistance, academic support, resources, and networking opportunities amongst students, faculty, and staff. Individual mentoring forms the core of this program, which entails monthly face-to-face contact with a mentee, as well as weekly check-ins by phone, email, or text.
The Beta Chi Mentoring Program aligns with the mission of the University and the Counseling Department to train 鈥減ersons for others,鈥 by creating a collaborative environment in which second-year and above students contribute to the development of new and/or struggling counseling students. This collaborative atmosphere helps new students to 鈥渓earn the ropes,鈥 while enhancing their sense of competence, identity, and connection. Both mentors and mentees are encouraged to participate actively in both Beta Chi and other Department of Counseling events.
If you are interested in participating in the program, please complete the appropriate application form listed below. Note that mentors should possess a GPA of 3.75, have completed CG 562 (Counseling Techniques), and have completed at least 18 credit hours.
The following are forms to complete during your mentoring program. Mentors should submit the Mentoring Contract at the beginning of the mentoring relationship. Both mentors and mentees should submit a brief Monthly Tracking Form each month.
