Upon completing a major or minor in chemistry, students will:

  1. Demonstrate a working knowledge in the sub-disciplines of chemistry where they have completed coursework (at least four of: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical).
  2. Apply their integrative knowledge of chemistry to solve problems.
  3. Demonstrate competency in the laboratory skills necessary to acquire, analyze, and interpret experimental results.
  4. Effectively communicate scientific information in a variety of forms (written, oral, and mathematical).

The Chemistry Department鈥檚 learning goals directly supports the University鈥檚 Academic Learning Goals. Specifically:

  1. Student Learning Goal #1 aligns with 鈥淒emonstrate an integrative knowledge of human and natural worlds.鈥 It will be assessed through the use of standardized exams in CH 222, CH 263, CH 361, CH 366, CH 481 and the final exams in CH 431, CH 435, and CH 436.
  2. Student Learning Goal #2 aligns with 鈥淒evelop habits of critical analysis and aesthetic appreciation鈥 and 鈥淎pply creative and innovative thinking.鈥 It will be assessed through the final exam in CH 443 and case study questions in CH 435 and CH 436.
  3. Student Learning Goal #3 aligns with 鈥淒evelop habits of critical analysis and aesthetic appreciation鈥 and 鈥淎pply creative and innovative thinking.鈥 It will be assessed in the relevant junior and senior lab courses (CH 367, CH 368, CH 399, CH 437, CH 443, and CH 482).
  4. Student Learning Goal #4 aligns with 鈥淐ommunicate skillfully in multiple forms of expression.鈥 Written and mathematical expression will be evaluated in CH 367 lab reports, CH 399 reports (for both on and off-campus projects), and honors theses completed within the department. Oral and mathematical expression will be evaluated in CH 367, CH 443, CH 482, and CH 439.
