Biography

Rodney Hessinger is an early American historian.聽 His courses focus on the social and cultural dimensions of the American past, exploring fields as diverse as Native American history, evangelical religion, the family and childhood, the colonial Caribbean, and the history of sexuality.聽聽 He is the author of聽Seduced, Abandoned, and Reborn: Visions of Youth in Middle-Class America, 1780-1850聽(University of Pennsylvania Press, 2005).聽 His current project is an exploration of religious conflict in the early American republic.聽 It pays particular attention to the way that churches deployed sexual scandal against their religious rivals.聽 This project, entitled 鈥淪mitten: Sex and Sectarian Conflict in the Second Great Awakening,鈥 is under contract with Cornell University Press.
