Dr. Finucane teaches the internship/capstone courses and directs the department鈥檚 internship program. Previously, Dr. Finucane directed the university鈥檚 Center for Service and Social Action.

Dr. Finucane researches interpersonal uses of mediated communication. She has studied television, cell phones, and social media. One of her fun pieces of research focused on women co-viewing the Bachelor! Interestingly, the social uses of sharing the viewing experience outweighed any interest in the program content. Her other research focuses on media, experiential learning outcomes, and biographies of women in media. Teaching is an important part of her work; in 2005, following a nomination from students, Dr. Finucane won for the College of Arts and Sciences鈥 Lucrezia Culicchia Teaching Award. In 2006, the university awarded the Curtis Miles Award for Faculty Service to Dr. Finucane. The award recognizes faculty for service to the university as well as the community. Dr. Finucane had created a course, Cultivating Community that exposed students to different aspects of urban life. The culminating activity was a day of service building community gardens in Cleveland鈥檚 Hough neighborhood, one of Cleveland鈥檚 poorest neighborhoods. Ohio Campus Compact awarded Dr. Finucane the David Hoch Memorial Award for Excellence in Service for her efforts in the Cleveland community.

Dr. Finucane spends her free time reading, especially historical fiction; and researching ancestry. She also spends time exploring Cleveland restaurants with her husband, Tom, and four adult children.
